CEAT participated as a vendor in the Chicago Airport System Annual Safety Expo at the O’Hare Airport on Wednesday, October 5, 2005. Representatives from the FAA, TSA, ALPA, OSHA, Depart of Aviation, Chicago Fire Department, Chicago Police Department and the American Society of Safety Engineers were some of the attendees this year. There were also representatives of domestic and international airlines at the expo. Many safety demonstrations were given throughout the day.

CEAT set up a booth which featured its Wildlife Safety Program. Aircraft safety is one of the highest priorities of the Federal Aviation Administration and airport operators. Among the hazards to the safe movement of aircraft are foreign objects that can collide with, and damage aircraft. Common foreign objects are debris on airport surfaces and wildlife, both on the ground and in the air. CEAT has been supporting efforts to identify technical solutions to foreign object debris (FOD) management at airports, and has been developing new tools to address the birdstrike hazards on, and around airports. Professor Edwin Herricks is the Principal Investigator for CEAT on Airport Safety Research.

The USDA supports three wildlife biologists at O’Hare Airport and Midway Airport, Craig Pullins, Jack Sengl and Doug Errands. They gave a special presentation about the capturing and safety of preserving the red-tailed hawks in and around the airport.
