The FAA has invited the Lighting Research Center (LRC) at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute to conduct research on new LED and tungsten halogen technologies for airport visual guidance. This new research initiative, established in November 2004 and funded starting in mid-2005, is funded directly by FAA through the FAA Center of Excellence program. CEAT, in its role as the FAA COE for Airport Technology, will serve as an umbrella organization to encompass this new work.

The LRC is the leading university-based research center devoted to lighting, and they offer the world's only M.S. degree in lighting. Since they began in 1988, they have built an international reputation as a reliable source for objective information about lighting technologies, applications, and products. They provide training programs for government agencies, utilities, contractors, lighting designers, and other lighting professionals. Their programs cover a range of activities including both laboratory testing of lighting products and real-world demonstration and evaluation of lighting products and designs. Dr. Nadarajah Narendran has served as director at the LRC since 1998.His research interests include solid-state lighting, advanced light source technologies, remote source/fiber-optic lighting, and sensors. More information about LRC is found at their website.
