Brawn was one of only eleven professors at the University of Illinois to receive the award for 2008. There were 486 members of AAAS elected to receive the Fellow rank in 2008. The honor is given for their efforts to advance science or its applications that are deemed scientifically or socially distinguished. Election as a fellow is an honor bestowed upon members by their peers.

Prof. Brawn is a Co-PI on the CEAT project for the O'Hare Modernization Program (OMP) entitled, "Airport Wildlife Safety". His research efforts contribute to this project at O'Hare along with Prof. Ed Herricks and Prof. Bruce Branhm. The goal of this research is to reduce bird presence at O'Hare International Airport in order to decrease the number of bird-aircraft strikes. Research in the soil-types and grass cover-types related to birds are helping to reduce the number of bird-strikes at O'Hare.

Brawn is a Professor in the Department of Natural Resources and Environmental Sciences (NRES) and in the Department of Animal Biology at UIUC since 2000. He is also the Director of a Program in Ecology, Evolution and Conservation Biology.
