The College of Engineering sponsors the program – Illinois Connections in Engineering (ICE) during the summer session for incoming freshman at UIUC.  The program was designed to give students the opportunity to begin preparing early for the academic year.  A beginning level Engineering class is taken by each student and other activities are scheduled for learning more about the various Engineering Departments at UIUC.

CEAT hosted one of the activities for this group on Friday, June 29.  There were 42 students who participated in the event which was held in a classroom in the Newmark Civil Engineering Lab.  The Center’s Director and two graduate students led the activities focusing on “Water Physics and the Affects on Materials”.  Prof. Lange gave an overview of CEAT and the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering.  He also led discussions with the students on civil engineering concepts on materials.

Yi-Shi Liu and Chang Joon Li were the two PhD students affiliated with CEAT who led the activities for this session. The students participated in demonstrations in the following civil engineering concepts about how water affects materials:

  • Surface Tension and Capillary Action
  • Water Interacts with Materials Absorption, Evaporation, and Volume Change
  • Mechanical Properties of Materials and the Effect of Water
  • Water and Ice Formation and the Effect on Materials
  • Water and Hydration Reactions with Materials
